Koichiro Shigaki is currently Assistant Professor in the International Institute of American Studies at Doshisha University, Kyoto, Japan. Prior to this position, he worked as a Production Assistant/Intern for Link TV San Francisco while completing a bachelor’s degree in Television and Radio at San Francisco State University. This was followed by doctoral and post-doctoral work in Media Studies from Tohoku University in Japan. He has a strong track record of successful awards and grantsmanship from the Japan-America Society (2011); the Japan Student Service Organization (JASSO) scholarship for research for his dissertation (2011); a grant from the Schlesinger Library at Harvard’s Radford Institute to investigate Frieda Hennock (2014); and grants from the Hoso Bunka Foundation (for Humanities and Social and Sciences in Japan, 2014 and 2015) on the Japan 2011 earthquake coverage and the Ford Foundation’s impact on public broadcasting. Besides travelling to the U.S. for study, he has studied and conducted research at Temple University, Harvard’s Radcliffe Institute of Advanced Studies. His research interests have dealt with media history in the U.S. non-profit broadcasting sector (especially in contrast to Japan’s public broadcasting), with particular emphasis on Frieda Hennock and the impact of philanthropy on educational broadcasting. He also worked for and helped a group research project “Community Radio case in Japan.” In addition to publications on these topics, he has also written on the roots of hip-hop and the role of media in the Great East Japan Earthquake. In addition to residing in the U.S. for study, he lived Puerto Rico for four years in his youth and studied abroad in Mexico during high school, gaining basic conversational ability in Spanish as well as fluency in English. He has coached children in film editing and dancing in the U.S., and mentored international students, taught English language in Aomori Koritsu University in Japan.
